Christian S

Christian Schwander joined Space Syntax in September 2006 as an Associate and is a registered architect and town planner.

He is currently working on a comparative cities study to inform the Jeddah master planning process and on a spatial analysis in the London Borough of Lewisham.

Transport networks and their impact on urban development are among his main fields of interest. He did theoretical research for his master thesis Network Urbanism - the Railway Network in South East England and gained practical experience while working for SEEDA, the South East England Development Agency, in the Planning and Infrastructure team.

Prior to joining the practice, Christian spent six years working in various architectural practices in Germany and Switzerland. As project architect he was responsible for both design and implementation of small-scale housing schemes and the masterplan for a large urban regeneration project.

He developed concepts for the transformation of industrial areas and derelict buildings through temporary interventions during his post gradual studies at the Bauhaus-University Weimar. While studying architecture at the Technical University Munich he focused on urban housing typologies and designed schemes for highdensity, mixed-use inner-city developments.

Christian favours an evidence based planning process and enjoys working at the interface between different professions.
