Internship

Internship scheme

Space Syntax runs a lively internship programme, offering placements to students and professional visitors from the UK and around the world. Internships typically last between six weeks and three months, during which time students will follow a programme of fundamental research and practical application. Interns are guided by a Director and Associate of the company but will need to be motivated and able to work alone. They will agree a plan of work at the outset and be expected to report their progress on a regular basis, culminating in a presentation to colleagues at the end of the internship. Interns may also be given the opportunity to work on consulting projects.

The internship programme runs to the following programme:

20th November to 1st December 2006
Applications open to students on the Advanced Architectural Studies course at University College London. Internships will be taken between January and June 2007.

16th April - 4th May 2007
Applications open to all. Internships will be taken between June and September 2007.

16th July - 3rd August 2007
Applications open to PhD students at University College London. Internships will be taken between September 2007 and January 2008.

Please note the following

  • Interns will not be paid during their internship programme, however there is a bursary to cover basic subsistence and travel during work hours of £17 per day. This does not constitute paid employment but is to cover expenses only.
  • Space Syntax will provide workstations, software and other resources and materials during the internship.
  • Interns will be provided with training on technical issues and the skills that they need for working on projects.
  • Full time internships run for five days per week for a minimum of six weeks, and part time internships for two days per week for a minimum of three months.
  • We are linked with various internship organisations including the Leonardo da Vinci programme, which can provide funding channels for students.

Application to the internship programme does not guarantee a placement. We will consider various criteria for short listing, including applicants’ interests, company interests and references from Course Tutors.

Applications should be sent, by email or in hardcopy, as detailed below. Applications should cover the following areas:

  1. Previous experience.
  2. Computer skills proficiency e.g. CAD, GIS, PowerPoint.
  3. Language skills and what level of English you speak/read/write.
  4. Whether you are applying for a full or part time internship.
  5. Preferred dates (given recommendations mentioned earlier).
  6. Your particular academic or research interests.
  7. Why you have chosen to apply to Space Syntax (no more than 200 words).

Please note that applications for the internship outside the specified dates will most likely not be considered.

“Here you will have the chance to look at how theory can be applied in the real world. And it gives you the chance to think through research questions, and to practise and learn from staff in the company.”

"The SSL internship will 1) tell you what you want to know for practice; 2) give you an idea how space syntax supports design in the real world; 3) help you to keep updated with the latest development in the practical applications and also know how it correlates to the latest theories; 4) teach you to master GIS systems and 5) encourage discussion and debate which is the premise to form new fantastic findings/ ideas.”

"You'll work hard on great projects, put everything you've been learning to use, learn more that they teach you by using it, and appear ten times cooler then other AAS students when you say 'Well when I was redesigning the Victoria Embankment at Space Syntax we did....' Plus you'll get loads of free help on your thesis that no one else will get."
