Building planning & design

We specialise in the concept design of new and refurbished buildings. Our work focuses on the key role that spatial design plays in the way buildings work. We advise on a wide range of building types including retail centres, hospitals, schools, museums, galleries and work environments. We show how the design of horizontal and vertical circulation influences user behaviour such as purchasing patterns in retail environments, circulation patterns in galleries and patterns of interaction in work environments. We assist in the development of retail and curatorial strategies and we work to make schools and hospitals safe, convivial and, ultimately, fit for purpose.

We use forecast models to show how, in plan and section, building designs are going to work. When appropriate, we undertake in-use surveys of user behaviour – as well as movement and space use surveys, these include, for example, surveys of telephone and email usage and questionnaires to understand staff interaction.
