Ji

Ji Zhang is an urban planner specialising in international urban planning, master planning and public realm design. She graduated from Tong Ji University with a degree in Urban Planning and Design. Ji has two masters, one from Tong Ji University specialising in Community Study (2001), and one from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London in Advanced Architecture Studies (2004). She is a Registered Urban Planner in China and Honorary Research Assistant at UCL.

Before joining Space Syntax in 2004, Ji worked for a Shanghai local planning authority on regulatory plan reviews and planning application approvals. Ji became an Associate in 2007 and has worked extensively on a wide range of projects within the UK and abroad including strategic city planning, city centre redevelopment, city center regeneration, large-scale urban masterplanning, retail development, public realm design, community safety and complex buildings. Her experience spans from China to the West, from architectural to urban projects.

In addition to professional practice, Ji also maintains active academic interests. She has co-translated Professor Bill Hillier’s book Space Is the Machine, guest edited the Space Syntax Monograph of World Architecture (Beijing, China), published and presented papers at the International Space Syntax Symposiums in Delft and Istanbul and lectured at Tong Ji, Tian Jin, Chong Qing universities in China.

Ji is especially interested in the correlation between spatial structure and land use patterns and their underlying economic effects on a city-wide scale.
