Alain

Alain Chiaradia registered as an architect in France. He has experience of working in both the public and private sectors, undertaking work ranging in scale from architecture options studies to strategic urban design and regeneration projects. Alain studied industrial design before gaining a diploma in architecture at the School of Architecture in Paul Nelson Studio, Marseilles, France. He studied in Italy with Daniel Libeskind, and gained a Post-Graduate Diploma from the Architectural Association, London.

Alain joined Space Syntax as a Research and Project Consultant in 2000 and became a Director in June 2004.

Alain has experience of detailed building design, with projects including feasibility studies and building option studies. Following university he worked as a freelance architect in both Marseilles and London before returning to teach in various universities, both lecturing alongside others and alone. His student studio projects have been awarded first prize at national, regional and european levels, and his work has been published and exhibited widely.

In recent years Alain has also worked on masterplanning projects for a wide range of clients in a number of contrasting locations. Recent projects include a Area Action Plan (part of the new planning development control system) Ilford Town Centre, an East London opportunity area and Oxford West End. Elephant and Castle (London opportunity area, SPG), Borough Framework, Millennium Quarter, and Stratford City in London; Ex Fair Milan in Italy and several competitions.

He is leading the Urban II European project ‘Reaching your destination; safe and easy movement in Stockwell,’ which covers 220 ha, 30,000 inhabitants in London includes the evaluation of 20 housing estates and devising a wide-ranging action plan. The project includes community and steering committee engagements. Alain is compliant with the RIBA Secured by Design programme.
